Landslide Leaves Nine Dead in Burundi

(MENAFN) At least nine fatalities and six injured victims resulted from a catastrophic landslide in Bujumbura Province, western Burundi, after relentless rainfall pounded the region Thursday afternoon, local media confirmed Friday.

Local media reported that Kirama Zone Chief Fulgence Nzosaba stated four houses were "completely destroyed at Rutunda by a landslide following heavy rains mixed with violent winds and hailstones."

Seven individuals were pronounced dead at the disaster site, one succumbed at Muramvya Hospital, and another corpse was extracted from the mud Friday, Nzosaba indicated.

He cautioned that adjacent residences and infrastructure face imminent danger with observable fractures spreading across their walls, emphasizing that occupants require immediate evacuation.

Nzosaba additionally appealed for emergency aid for the wounded and others impacted by the landslide.
